Breast cancer treatment in IndiaMedical treatment in India for Mauritian patients
For patients travelling from Mauritius, seeking treatment abroad involves more than selecting a hospital. It usually means understanding the diagnosis, finding the appropriate specialist, obtaining a medical opinion, comparing treatment options, understanding the estimated cost, arranging the correct visa, planning travel from Port Louis and preparing for follow-up after returning home. GAF Healthcare helps connect Mauritian patients with appropriate hospitals and specialist doctors in India.
Quick answer
Mauritian patients can seek specialist treatment in India for a wide range of medical conditions, including:
The process generally starts by sharing the patient's medical records. An appropriate Indian specialist or hospital can then review the case and provide a medical opinion, proposed treatment, expected duration and indicative cost.
Mauritian passport holders are currently eligible for India's e-Visa system, including the e-Medical Visa category. India's official portal lists Mauritius among eligible nationalities. The current official guidance states that eligible e-Medical applicants can apply online at least four days before arrival, with a 120-day application window.
Mauritian patients should always verify the latest requirements on the official Indian visa portal before applying.
Travelling from Mauritius to India for medical treatment is an important decision for the patient and family. Patients may consider the availability of specialist treatment, the complexity of the condition, access to multidisciplinary teams, diagnostic facilities, surgical options, expected duration, indicative cost, visa requirements, flight connections, accommodation, attendant arrangements and follow-up after returning to Mauritius.
The appropriate hospital should be selected according to the patient's diagnosis and treatment requirements rather than simply choosing a city or a well-known hospital name.
India and Mauritius have a long-standing healthcare relationship. The High Commission of India in Port Louis records that Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital was requested during the 1983 visit of Mauritius’ then Prime Minister, agreed at the 1984 Joint Commission, financed by an Indian grant, and inaugurated on 14 November 1990.
India’s official bilateral brief records that, on Mauritius’ request, India supplied 13 tonnes of medicines, 10 tonnes of Ayurvedic medicines and an Indian Rapid Response Medical Team during April–May 2020, and was the first country to supply COVID-19 vaccines to Mauritius in January 2021.
The same official record states that a Mediclinic and the first overseas Jan Aushadhi Kendra were inaugurated in Mauritius in 2024, and that a renal transplant unit was inaugurated in April 2026. India and Mauritius have also agreed in principle on cooperation involving a new Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital and an AYUSH Centre of Excellence. This documented relationship does not guarantee a particular treatment, hospital or clinical outcome. Each patient requires an individual medical assessment.

Mauritius has its own hospitals and specialists. International treatment becomes relevant when a patient needs a particular specialist, advanced procedure, complex surgery, specialised diagnostics, multidisciplinary care or another service that is not readily available locally.
The decision should be based on the patient’s individual medical requirements, discussed with the current doctor and, where appropriate, an Indian specialist after records review.
Depending on the diagnosis, Mauritian patients may consider India for the specialties below. The appropriate pathway should always be determined by a qualified medical professional after reviewing the clinical information.

Cancer is an important part of Mauritius’ health profile. According to the IARC GLOBOCAN 2022 Mauritius fact sheet, the country had an estimated 2,976 new cancer cases, 1,471 cancer deaths and 7,844 five-year prevalent cases. These are GLOBOCAN 2022 estimates, not current 2026 case counts, and they should not be used to diagnose an individual patient.
The same official fact sheet ranks breast first among estimated new cases in both sexes (608; 20.4%), followed by colorectum (344; 11.6%), prostate (254; 8.5%), lung (166; 5.6%) and corpus uteri (158; 5.3%). Among Mauritian men, prostate, colorectal and lung cancers were the leading sites. Among Mauritian women, breast cancer accounted for the largest number of estimated new cases, followed by colorectal and corpus uteri cancers. GAF does not yet publish dedicated lung-cancer, corpus-uteri or liver-cancer pages; those cases are coordinated through the relevant oncology team after records review.
There is no single fixed price for medical treatment in India. Online cost figures should be considered indicative planning ranges, not final hospital quotations. GAF Healthcare presents costs as USD planning estimates from the live catalogue, not guaranteed prices.

A preliminary estimate may change if additional investigations are required, the disease is more advanced than expected, a different procedure or implant is needed, ICU care becomes necessary, hospitalisation is extended, or a complication develops.
Get a treatment-cost review on WhatsAppBefore travelling, ask whether the estimate includes doctor fees, admission, room charges, surgery, anaesthesia, operating-room charges, ICU, nursing, medicines, consumables, implants, pathology, imaging, blood products, physiotherapy and follow-up consultations.
Two hospitals can quote different amounts because their estimates cover different items. Compare the scope of treatment alongside the headline price.
There is no single city that is appropriate for every medical condition. The city should be selected according to the patient's diagnosis, hospital and specialist. Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru have specialist hospitals in GAF’s live catalogue.

Many international medical journeys from Mauritius begin at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, the country's principal international airport near Port Louis. Patients may travel directly or through a connecting hub before reaching India.
| Treatment destination | Likely arrival airport |
|---|---|
| Delhi NCR | Indira Gandhi International Airport |
| Mumbai | Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport |
| Chennai | Chennai International Airport |
| Hyderabad | Rajiv Gandhi International Airport |
| Bengaluru | Kempegowda International Airport |
Confirm the current itinerary with the airline or travel provider. Flight options from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport and connecting hubs change by season.
The required stay depends on the treatment. These are planning estimates rather than guarantees. The treating hospital should provide a more specific expected duration after evaluating the patient.
| Treatment | Possible stay |
|---|---|
| Specialist consultation | 2–5 days |
| Diagnostic evaluation | 2–7 days |
| Major surgery | 1–4 weeks or longer |
| Joint replacement | Around 1–3 weeks |
| Cancer surgery | Often 2–4 weeks |
| Radiation or chemotherapy | Depends on protocol |
| Complex transplant | Several weeks to months |
A medical-travel file should contain both physical and digital copies. For cancer patients, pathology and actual imaging are particularly important. For cardiac patients, angiography images and echocardiography reports help the specialist assess the case.
For neurosurgical cases, actual MRI or CT images should be provided wherever possible, alongside the radiology report.
Accommodation should be selected according to the patient's medical condition and treatment schedule. Patients receiving radiation therapy, chemotherapy or repeated outpatient treatment may benefit from staying close to the hospital.
Patients may have dietary requirements because of diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, liver disease, cancer treatment, gastrointestinal conditions or post-operative recovery. Follow the diet recommended by the treating team.
Mauritian patients may also prefer accommodation where meals can be prepared according to familiar dietary preferences, particularly during longer stays.
English is widely used in India's healthcare system, and it is also the language of instruction at Mauritius' medical colleges. For many Mauritian patients, this can make communication with Indian hospitals relatively straightforward. Important medical instructions should nevertheless be provided in writing whenever possible.
A patient should ideally not travel internationally without understanding the basic treatment pathway. A records-first sequence allows many questions to be addressed before leaving Port Louis.
Send the diagnosis, medical summary, blood tests, imaging, pathology, previous treatment and current medicines.
The case is mapped to the relevant specialty — for example breast cancer to surgical, medical and radiation oncology.
The selected Indian hospital or specialist reviews the medical records. Additional investigations may be recommended.
Compare the hospital, doctor, treatment plan, indicative cost, expected stay, city and follow-up requirements.
The hospital can provide the treatment and admission documentation required for the applicable visa process.
Eligible Mauritian patients can use India's e-Medical Visa route or the regular Medical Visa through the High Commission in Port Louis.
Flights, accommodation and airport transfers can be planned around the expected hospital admission date.
The patient undergoes the recommended investigations and treatment after assessment and consent.
Obtain the discharge summary, investigation reports, operative notes, pathology, medication list and follow-up instructions.
Travel home only after the treating doctor clears the patient to fly.
Ask which reports should be repeated and whether selected reviews can continue remotely.
Carry complete discharge and follow-up documents for any later review in Mauritius or India.
GAF Healthcare can assist patients from Mauritius with the practical process of seeking medical treatment in India. The exact services available should be confirmed before travel.
GAF Healthcare’s role is coordination, not a substitute for the treating doctor. Remote review cannot replace an in-person examination when one is medically necessary.
A preliminary review from Port Louis can help clarify the specialty, whether further information is required, potential treatment and hospital options, indicative cost and expected stay.
International treatment may not be appropriate when the patient requires emergency treatment, is medically unstable for long-distance travel, the treatment is readily available locally, or the patient is not medically fit to fly.
A hospital having a particular department does not necessarily mean it is appropriate for every form of that disease. The relevant doctor's experience with the patient's specific condition is more useful than the hospital's overall profile.
