What is Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS)?
The oropharynx includes the tonsil fossae, base of tongue, soft palate and lateral pharyngeal walls. Important nearby structures include the carotid artery, the nerves to the tongue and the swallowing sphincter. Neck nodes are usually addressed in the same treatment plan, often through a separate neck incision. TORS is a route to the primary tumour, not a substitute for neck dissection and not a smaller cancer operation. A tumour that cannot be seen completely through the mouth, or that encases the carotid, is not a TORS case.
