Dr. Anil Bhan

Dr. Anil Bhan is a distinguished cardiac surgeon and the current Chairman of Cardiac Surgery, Heart Transplant, and Cardiac Care at Medanta – The Medicity in Gurugram. A graduate of Medical College Srinagar, where he was honoured as best outgoing graduate and Gold Medalist, he brings 38 years of exceptional expertise in complex cardiac and vascular surgery. His credentials span MCh in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, MS in General Surgery, and MBBS from Medical College Srinagar.

Dr. Bhan has performed over 15,000 cardiac and vascular procedures with outcomes matching international standards. He possesses the largest experience in aortic surgery in India and has pioneered numerous techniques, including performing India's first extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in 2000 and the first use of harmonic scalpel for arterial conduit harvesting in 1995. His surgical repertoire encompasses coronary artery bypass grafting, multi-valve repairs and replacements, aortic aneurysm surgery, heart transplantation, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, and complex pediatric cardiac procedures. He has also designed and developed over 50 surgical instruments that advance the field of cardiac surgery.

As a core member of India's first successful heart transplantation team in 1994, Dr. Bhan helped establish the foundation for advanced cardiac care in the country. He has been instrumental in launching three major cardiac surgical programmes—at Puttaparthi (1992), Whitefield (2001), and Max Heart and Vascular Institute Saket (2004)—demonstrating his commitment to expanding access to world-class cardiac care.
