Why Patients Come to Hyderabad for Urological Surgery
Hyderabad has built a deep bench in urology, and transplant work is where it shows most clearly. Four things account for most of why international patients come here.
1. Depth in Transplant and Endourology
Several large hospitals here run kidney transplant programmes with urologists at the centre of them rather than as occasional participants. That concentration pulls in surgeons who do complex reconstructive and stone work as their whole practice. If your problem is unusual, this is a reasonable place to look.
2. A City You Can Actually Move Around
Hospitals cluster in a handful of identifiable areas, and the Outer Ring Road connects them without crossing the centre. Journeys that take two hours in other Indian metros often take forty minutes here. When you have appointments on consecutive days while recovering, that counts for a lot.
3. Comfortable for Gulf and East African Patients
For patients from the Gulf, Yemen, Sudan and East Africa, Hyderabad is often an easier place to spend three weeks than its clinical reputation alone suggests:
-
Urdu is widely spoken across the city
-
Halal food is normal rather than something to hunt for
-
Mosques are everywhere
-
Long-stay serviced apartments are common near the hospitals
None of this affects the surgery. It affects everything around the surgery, which is most of your time here.
4. Cancer Cases Go to a Board
Where the diagnosis is cancer of the prostate, bladder or kidney, the plan should come out of a multidisciplinary meeting rather than from one surgeon working alone. The urologist should be reviewing it alongside medical and radiation oncologists, radiology and pathology.
Ask whether your case goes to that meeting, and ask for the conclusion in writing.
Language
Consultations at the major hospitals run in English. Interpreters for Arabic, French, Russian and Kiswahili are available at most of the hospitals listed here, and we arrange them before you arrive rather than on the day.
Cost
Cost is generally lower than in Europe, North America or the Gulf. How much lower depends on the procedure, the technique and the length of your stay.
We print no figure here, because a number quoted before anyone has read your scans is a guess. Ask the hospital for an itemised written estimate, check what it leaves out, and get it confirmed in writing. That goes for any figure you hear from us too.

About Urology Care in Hyderabad
Urology covers the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate and urethra, along with the male reproductive organs. Below is what that means in practice in Hyderabad, and what to ask about each.
1. Where the Hospitals Are
Hyderabad and Secunderabad work as one city in practice. The hospitals sit in four or five recognisable pockets:
-
The western technology corridor around Hitec City and Gachibowli
-
Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills
-
Somajiguda and the central districts
-
Secunderabad to the north
Find out which pocket your hospital is in before booking anywhere to stay, then book close to it. Serviced apartments are common near the western corridor, which suits longer recoveries where being able to cook matters.
2. Kidney Transplantation and the Law
Transplantation is a significant part of urological practice here, often shared between urologists and dedicated transplant teams. The legal framework is strict and worth understanding before you make any plans:
-
Living donation is limited to specified relatives
-
Anything outside that requires authorisation committee approval
-
Documentation of the relationship is required, with evidence that no money changed hands
-
Foreign nationals face additional requirements
Organs cannot be bought or sold. If any agent tells you a paid donor can be arranged, they are describing a crime rather than a service. Walk away and report it.
3. Stone Disease
This makes up a large share of routine work, as it does across India. Most of it is treated endoscopically. The choice between shock waves from outside the body, a telescope passed up the urinary tract, and a small tract made directly into the kidney turns on the size and hardness of the stone and the shape of your kidney.
Stones sitting in the bladder are a separate problem with a separate fix, usually bladder stone removal through the urethra. In men they frequently signal an obstruction further down that also needs treating. Deal with the stone and ignore the cause and you will be back.
4. The Prostate
An enlarged prostate is not cancer, though the symptoms overlap enough that assessment has to start with examination and tests. When medication stops being enough, surgery is usually resection through the urethra, the operation called TURP, or one of several laser alternatives.
Where the question is cancer rather than obstruction, the answer comes from a prostate biopsy and not from a PSA result on its own. A raised PSA has several explanations and most of them are not cancer.
Where prostate cancer is confirmed and surgery is the right treatment, robotic prostatectomy is the usual approach at the larger centres here. The robot is a tool, not a guarantee. Ask what your surgeon's own results look like, and what the alternatives to operating are.
5. Reconstructive Urology
This is where Hyderabad's subspecialisation pays off. Narrowing of the urethra after injury, infection or previous instrumentation is treated by urethral surgery, and outcomes depend more on how much of this specific work a surgeon does than on almost anything else.
Ask how many they perform in a year. It is a fair question and a good surgeon will not mind it.
6. Paediatric Urology
This is a separate practice with separate training, and Hyderabad has it as a distinct specialty rather than something adult surgeons take on occasionally. Conditions such as an undescended testicle have a timing element, so undescended testicle surgery is worth asking about early rather than waiting to see.
Say at the outset that the patient is a child, so you are directed to the right clinic. An adult urologist, however senior, is not the right surgeon for a child.

How to Select the Best Doctor for Urology in Hyderabad, India?
Choosing the right urology surgeon is one of the most important decisions in your treatment journey. A few factors are worth weighing before you decide:
Experience and Expertise
Look for a surgeon with a strong track record in urology specifically, not just general surgery. Years of listed experience — shown on every profile below — is a reasonable starting point.
Specialization
Urology covers a wide range of procedures, from routine endoscopic work to complex organ transplants. Check that the doctor's listed procedures (see "Procedures in urology" below) actually match the treatment you need.
Hospital Affiliation
The hospital matters as much as the surgeon. Look for an accredited centre with a dedicated gastroenterology/HPB (hepatopancreatobiliary) unit, ICU support, and experience treating international patients — see "Hospitals where these doctors operate" below.
Communication and Second Opinions
You should be able to get clear answers about your case before committing to travel. Ask for a written second opinion on your reports, in a language you're comfortable in, before you decide.
Transparent Costs
Ask for an itemised, all-inclusive estimate — surgeon's fee, hospital charges and stay — before you travel, so there are no surprises once treatment begins. Our cost calculator (linked below) gives a starting estimate.
