Why consider treatment in India?
Many international patients consider India for multiple myeloma treatment for several reasons, including:
More affordable estimates
Competitive indicative costs compared with many other countries, for similar clinical standards.
Internationally accredited hospitals
Hospitals experienced in treating international patients.
Experienced specialists
Doctors who regularly manage similar cases.
Care coordination support
A team to help with planning, medical translation and follow-up.
What is Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation?
Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation (ASCT) is a treatment for multiple myeloma and certain other blood cancers in which a patient's own stem cells are collected, high-dose chemotherapy is given to destroy diseased bone marrow, and the stored stem cells are then reinfused to rebuild healthy marrow function. It is considered a standard-of-care consolidation therapy for eligible myeloma patients after initial induction chemotherapy, aiming to achieve deeper and longer-lasting disease remission. India offers this procedure at leading BMT centers with internationally trained hematologists at a fraction of Western costs.
Who may be considered?
Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation may be considered after a qualified specialist reviews your reports and medical history. Suitability varies from person to person and must be assessed by your treating doctor.
How does it work?
Stem cells are mobilized from bone marrow into the bloodstream using growth factors (with or without chemotherapy priming), collected via apheresis, and reinfused after high-dose melphalan conditioning.
Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Mobilization & Transplant
Most CommonStem cells are mobilized from bone marrow into the bloodstream using growth factors (with or without chemotherapy priming), collected via apheresis, and reinfused after high-dose melphalan conditioning.
Comprehensive Investigations
CBC, kidney and liver function tests, bone marrow biopsy and aspirate, skeletal survey/whole body MRI, echocardiogram, ECG, pulmonary function test, viral serology (HIV, Hepatitis B/C), HLA typing (if allogeneic considered), serum protein electrophoresis, beta-2 microglobulin
Treatment / Procedure Estimate
Stay in India
Usually Included in Hospital Package

Recovery and follow-up
Most patients remain hospitalized for 2-3 weeks post-transplant until blood counts recover, followed by 4-6 weeks of home recovery with close monitoring for infections before returning to normal activities.
Risks
Potential risks include infection due to temporary immune suppression, mucositis, nausea, bleeding, organ toxicity from high-dose chemotherapy, and in rare cases graft failure or transplant-related mortality.
Alternatives
Alternatives include continued conventional chemotherapy without transplant, novel targeted or immunotherapy regimens (e.g., monoclonal antibodies, CAR-T therapy), or allogeneic stem cell transplantation in select high-risk cases.
