About Myelodysplastic Syndromes doctors in Delhi NCR, India

This directory is based on doctors currently listed in GAF Healthcare's registry. Clinical suitability varies by patient; a doctor should review your history and investigations before any treatment decision.

About the Condition

What is Myelodysplastic Syndromes?

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of bone marrow disorders in which the marrow fails to produce enough healthy, functional blood cells — red cells, white cells, and platelets — leading to cytopenias and an increased risk of serious infection, bleeding, and fatigue-related complications. MDS ranges widely in severity: some forms remain stable for years, while others carry a significant risk of transforming into acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), making accurate risk stratification essential. Contributing factors can include prior chemotherapy or radiation, exposure to certain chemicals or heavy metals, and age, though many cases arise without a clear identifiable cause. A thorough assessment of medical history, blood counts, bone marrow biopsy findings, and chromosomal analysis is required to guide any treatment decision.

Treatment options for Myelodysplastic Syndromes

Care may include lifestyle changes, medical treatment, specialist review or a procedure, depending on the diagnosis, associated conditions and individual goals. The options below are associated with this condition in the GAF Healthcare directory.

Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplantation

Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplantation (allo-BMT) involves replacing a patient's diseased or non-functioning bone marrow with healthy blood-forming stem cells from a matched donor.

Why it may be consideredIt is a curative option for conditions such as Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) and severe Aplastic Anemia, where the patient's own marrow fails to produce healthy blood cells. The procedure requires conditioning chemotherapy/radiation, stem cell infusion, and prolonged monitoring for engraftment and immune recovery.

Common questions

FAQs about Myelodysplastic Syndromes in Delhi NCR, India

What is Myelodysplastic Syndromes?
Myelodysplastic syndromes are a family of clonal bone marrow disorders characterised by abnormal blood cell production, resulting in low or dysfunctional blood cell counts and, in some subtypes, a meaningful risk of progression to acute leukaemia.
What are the symptoms and health risks of Myelodysplastic Syndromes?
Common symptoms include persistent fatigue and breathlessness (from anaemia), a tendency to bruise or bleed easily (from low platelets), and recurrent or difficult-to-clear infections (from reduced or poorly functioning white blood cells). Some individuals have minimal symptoms at diagnosis and are identified incidentally through routine blood tests. Symptoms alone are not sufficient to diagnose MDS, as many conditions can produce similar blood count abnormalities.
How is Myelodysplastic Syndromes diagnosed?
Diagnosis typically begins with a full blood count revealing one or more cytopenias, followed by a bone marrow aspirate and trephine biopsy to examine cell morphology and blast percentage. Cytogenetic analysis — and increasingly, molecular genetic testing for mutations in genes such as SF3B1, ASXL1, or TP53 — is central to classifying MDS and assigning a risk score. The Revised International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS-R) integrates blast count, cytogenetics, haemoglobin, platelet count, and neutrophil count to stratify patients into risk categories that directly inform treatment planning; only a qualified haematologist can interpret these findings in the context of an individual patient's full clinical picture.
How is Myelodysplastic Syndromes treated?
Treatment approach depends heavily on the IPSS-R risk category, the patient's age, overall fitness, and the presence of specific molecular mutations. Lower-risk MDS may be managed with supportive care, growth factors, or disease-modifying agents for months to years before any escalation is considered, whereas higher-risk MDS often warrants more intensive intervention. For eligible patients, allogeneic bone marrow (stem cell) transplantation is currently the only treatment with curative potential, though the decision to proceed requires careful assessment of donor availability, transplant-related risks, and the patient's overall health status.
Can Myelodysplastic Syndromes be treated without surgery?
Non-procedural management plays a central role in lower-risk MDS and includes regular monitoring with blood counts, red cell or platelet transfusions to manage cytopenias, erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) to reduce transfusion dependence, and hypomethylating agents such as azacitidine or decitabine, which can improve blood counts and delay disease progression. Lenalidomide is an established option for a specific subtype associated with the del(5q) chromosomal abnormality. These approaches do not cure MDS in most cases, but they can meaningfully improve quality of life and are an appropriate long-term strategy for many patients, particularly those who are not candidates for transplantation.
When is Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplantation considered for Myelodysplastic Syndromes?
Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplantation may be considered when conservative or medical options have not achieved enough improvement, or when the severity of the condition warrants it. The decision depends on clinical assessment, expected benefits and individual risks.
Which doctor treats Myelodysplastic Syndromes?
MDS is primarily evaluated and managed by a haematologist with expertise in bone marrow disorders and myeloid malignancies; patients being considered for transplantation are co-managed by a haematologist and a bone marrow transplant (BMT) specialist, ideally within a centre that has a dedicated transplant programme.
How do I choose a doctor for Myelodysplastic Syndromes?
When comparing providers, look for a haematologist or BMT centre with a documented volume of MDS cases and transplant procedures, access to comprehensive cytogenetic and molecular diagnostic services, a multidisciplinary team that includes transplant physicians, infectious disease specialists, and supportive care nurses, and a clear protocol for long-term follow-up and graft-versus-host disease management if transplantation is undertaken.
What documents do international patients need to share for a medical evaluation?
Share a medical summary, investigation and imaging or biopsy reports where relevant, a current medication list, previous diagnoses and related treatment records. Provide clear copies with translation where needed.
How does GAF Healthcare help international patients plan treatment in India?
Our care coordination team helps review initial medical information, connect you with suitable doctors and hospitals, explain next steps and indicative estimates, and organise a treatment plan before travel.
