Why consider treatment in India?
Many international patients consider India for breast cancer treatment for several reasons, including:
More affordable estimates
Competitive indicative costs compared with many other countries, for similar clinical standards.
Internationally accredited hospitals
Hospitals experienced in treating international patients.
Experienced specialists
Doctors who regularly manage similar cases.
Care coordination support
A team to help with planning, medical translation and follow-up.
What is Mastectomy?
Mastectomy is the surgical removal of one or both breasts, performed most commonly as a treatment for breast cancer or as a risk-reducing procedure in patients with high genetic risk (e.g., BRCA mutations). Depending on the stage of disease and patient preference, it may be combined with lymph node evaluation and immediate or delayed breast reconstruction. India offers advanced oncoplastic and reconstructive expertise at a fraction of Western costs.
Who may be considered?
Mastectomy may be considered after a qualified specialist reviews your reports and medical history. Suitability varies from person to person and must be assessed by your treating doctor.
How does it work?
Removal of the entire breast tissue including the nipple-areola complex, without removal of underarm lymph nodes; often used for DCIS or preventive surgery.
Simple (Total) Mastectomy
Most CommonRemoval of the entire breast tissue including the nipple-areola complex, without removal of underarm lymph nodes; often used for DCIS or preventive surgery.
Comprehensive Investigations
Mammogram, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, core needle biopsy with histopathology, CBC, ECG, chest X-ray, coagulation profile
Treatment / Procedure Estimate

Recovery and follow-up
Most patients resume light daily activities within 2-3 weeks, with full recovery and return to normal arm movement taking 4-6 weeks; drains are typically removed within 1-2 weeks and follow-up includes wound checks and pathology-based oncology planning.
Risks
Potential risks include bleeding, infection, seroma formation, changes in chest wall sensation, and lymphedema (if lymph nodes are removed), with reconstruction cases carrying additional risks such as implant complications or flap failure.
Alternatives
Depending on tumor size and stage, alternatives may include breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) combined with radiotherapy, or neoadjuvant chemotherapy to shrink the tumor before considering surgery.
