Dr. (Prof) Debashish Chowdhury — Vice Chairman and Academic Head in Delhi NCR

Dr. (Prof) Debashish Chowdhury is Vice Chairman and Academic Head of the Department of Neurology at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital in Delhi NCR, with more than 37 years of experience.

His list covers epilepsy management and drug-resistant epilepsy, seizure disorders, Parkinson's disease, dystonia and tremor disorders, neuropathic pain, and the full arc of stroke care: acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke management, post-stroke neurological care, and prevention and secondary care. EEG, IV thrombolysis, deep brain stimulation and botulinum toxin therapy sit behind that list.

He read MBBS at Maulana Azad Medical College in 1985, took a diploma in tuberculosis and chest diseases at the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute in 1990, and both his MD in internal medicine and his DM in neurology in 1993, the latter at G. B. Pant Hospital. His later training was abroad: headache disorders at Trinity College, University of Cambridge, in 2001, good clinical practice with Harvard Medical International the same year, and a stroke medicine fellowship at Edinburgh in 2003.

Headache is where his research sits. His recent work includes the ANODYNE study in Cephalalgia, a trial of greater occipital nerve block with methylprednisolone and lignocaine against placebo for episodic cluster headache, a cluster headache consensus publication in The Journal of Headache and Pain, a population-based assessment of headache burden in Delhi-NCR, the validation of a Hindi HARDSHIP questionnaire for community headache research, and a scoping review of migraine's impact on productivity in Indian adults.

He delivered the IAN Presidential Oration in 2024, and received the Distinguished Alumnus Award of Maulana Azad Medical College in 2022 and a state award for healthcare contributions from the Government of Delhi in 2016.
