What is Matched Sibling Donor Transplant?
A Matched Sibling Donor (MSD) Transplant is a stem cell transplant in which bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cells from an HLA-matched brother or sister are infused into a patient with Thalassemia Major after conditioning chemotherapy. It is currently the only established curative treatment for Thalassemia Major, replacing the patient's defective blood-forming cells with healthy donor cells. Outcomes are best when performed at a young age with a fully matched sibling and minimal prior iron overload or organ damage.

Alternatives
Alternatives for patients without a matched sibling donor include Matched Unrelated Donor (MUD) transplant, Haploidentical (half-matched family donor) transplant, or continued lifelong management with regular blood transfusions and iron chelation therapy. Gene therapy is an emerging but currently limited-access option for select patients.
