Why consider treatment in India?

Many international patients consider India for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps treatment for several reasons, including:

More affordable estimates

Competitive indicative costs compared with many other countries, for similar clinical standards.

Internationally accredited hospitals

Hospitals experienced in treating international patients.

Experienced specialists

Doctors who regularly manage similar cases.

Care coordination support

A team to help with planning, medical translation and follow-up.

About the Procedure

What is Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)?

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a nasal endoscope to remove nasal polyps, correct blocked sinus drainage pathways, and clear infected or diseased tissue. It is commonly recommended for patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps who have not responded to medical therapy such as steroids or antibiotics. The goal is to restore normal sinus ventilation and drainage, relieving symptoms like nasal blockage, facial pain, and recurrent infections.

Who may be considered?

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) may be considered after a qualified specialist reviews your reports and medical history. Suitability varies from person to person and must be assessed by your treating doctor.

How does it work?

Rigid nasal endoscopes and fine instruments are used to remove polyps and open sinus drainage pathways under direct visualization, without external incisions.

2 approaches available for this procedure:

Standard Endoscopic FESS

Most Popular

Rigid nasal endoscopes and fine instruments are used to remove polyps and open sinus drainage pathways under direct visualization, without external incisions.

Comprehensive Investigations

Estimated cost: $150 - $500

CT scan of paranasal sinuses, nasal endoscopy, CBC, coagulation profile, allergy screening (if indicated), ECG

Treatment / Procedure Estimate

Estimated cost in India: $1,800 - $3,500

Stay in India

Pre-procedure stay (outside hospital): ~1 day
Hospitalisation: ~1-2 days
Recovery period (outside hospital): ~7-10 days recommended
Total stay: approx 10-13 days

Usually Included in Hospital Package

  • Surgeon and anesthetist fees
  • Operating room and endoscopic equipment charges
  • Standard hospital room stay
  • Routine post-operative medications
  • One follow-up consultation with nasal cleaning

Usually Not Included

  • Airfare and visa charges
  • Local accommodation beyond hospital stay
  • Histopathology of removed tissue
  • Post-discharge medications beyond first course
  • Any additional imaging if complications arise

Recovery and follow-up

Most patients resume normal activities within 1-2 weeks, with saline nasal irrigation and follow-up endoscopic cleaning essential during the first month to ensure proper healing and prevent scarring. Full resolution of sinus lining healing may take 6-8 weeks, during which follow-up visits are recommended.

Risks

As with any sinus surgery, risks include bleeding, infection, temporary or rare permanent changes in smell, and, uncommonly, injury to structures near the eye or skull base. Polyps can also recur, particularly in patients with severe allergic or asthmatic disease.

Alternatives

Non-surgical options include prolonged courses of nasal/oral steroids, biologic therapy for eosinophilic polyps, and saline irrigations, which may be tried before considering surgery. Balloon sinuplasty is a less invasive alternative for select patients with limited sinus disease and no significant polyps.

What we need to prepare a formal estimate

Share whatever you have — the care team will confirm the final checklist after reviewing your case.

Reports required

  • CT scan of paranasal sinuses (recent, within 3 months)
  • Diagnostic nasal endoscopy report
  • Allergy testing results (if performed)
  • Previous sinus surgery records (for revision cases)
  • Current medication list including nasal sprays/steroids
  • Recent blood test reports (CBC, coagulation profile)
  • MRI of paranasal sinuses/brain (if skull base concern)

Patient information needed

  • Duration and severity of nasal blockage or loss of smell
  • History of asthma, aspirin sensitivity, or allergies
  • Any prior sinus or nasal surgeries
  • Current use of blood thinners or steroid medications
  • Smoking history
  • Any known bleeding disorders
  • General health conditions such as diabetes or hypertension

Costs shown are indicative planning estimates based on typical pricing across leading Indian hospitals. They are not a quote — actual pricing depends on your case complexity, hospital choice, and length of stay. Share your reports for a personalized estimate.

Common questions

FAQs about Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) in Hyderabad, India

What is Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps?
Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps is a persistent inflammatory condition lasting 12 weeks or more in which soft, non-cancerous growths form inside the nasal and sinus cavities, impairing normal breathing, drainage, and often the sense of smell. It is distinct from simple sinusitis and typically reflects an underlying pattern of chronic type-2 airway inflammation.
What are the symptoms and health risks of Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps?
The most common symptoms include persistent nasal congestion or blockage, reduced or absent sense of smell (hyposmia or anosmia), facial pressure or fullness, postnasal drip, and chronic nasal discharge that may be discolored. Many people also experience sleep disturbance, fatigue, and recurring chest symptoms if asthma is also present. It is important to note that symptom severity does not always correlate with polyp burden or sinus involvement, and a clinical assessment is needed to establish the nature and extent of the condition.
How is Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps diagnosed?
Diagnosis is typically established by an ENT specialist through a combination of symptom duration (generally 12 weeks or more), anterior rhinoscopy or nasal endoscopy to visualize polyps directly, and CT imaging of the paranasal sinuses, which allows assessment of disease extent and is often staged using the Lund-Mackay scoring system. Allergy testing, assessment for aspirin sensitivity, and pulmonary function tests may also be arranged where co-existing conditions are suspected. Blood or tissue eosinophil counts and, increasingly, measurement of type-2 inflammatory markers can help characterize disease endotype and guide biological therapy decisions.
How is Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps treated?
Treatment is tailored to disease severity, extent of sinus involvement, response to prior therapy, and any associated conditions, and ranges from medical management alone to surgical intervention. Mild-to-moderate disease is generally addressed first with intranasal corticosteroids and saline irrigation, with systemic corticosteroids or additional medications added for more significant disease. When medical therapy provides insufficient control, or when polyp burden causes substantial obstruction, procedural options such as functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) or nasal polypectomy may be recommended, and biologic therapies targeting type-2 inflammation are an option for eligible patients with severe or recurrent disease.
Can Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps be treated without a procedure?
Non-surgical management is a well-established and often first-line approach for CRSwNP and includes high-volume saline nasal irrigation, intranasal corticosteroid sprays or drops, short courses of systemic corticosteroids for acute worsening, and treatment of contributing factors such as allergies or aspirin sensitivity. For patients with severe, steroid-dependent, or surgically recurrent disease, monoclonal antibody biologics (such as dupilumab or mepolizumab, where approved and individually appropriate) represent an important non-surgical option; however, eligibility and suitability must be determined by a qualified clinician based on individual assessment.
When is Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) considered for Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps?
Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) may be considered only when it is appropriate for the confirmed diagnosis and the expected benefit outweighs the individual risks. The decision may depend on symptom severity, investigation results, previous treatment, overall health and the patient's goals. A specialist should discuss alternatives and recovery before any procedure is planned.
Which doctor treats Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps?
CRSwNP is primarily evaluated and managed by an otolaryngologist (ENT specialist), and complex or refractory cases—particularly those involving asthma, AERD, or consideration of biologic therapy—may benefit from collaborative input from an allergist-immunologist or a respiratory physician.
How do I choose a doctor for Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps?
When selecting a specialist, it is worth asking about their experience with endoscopic sinus procedures and nasal polyp recurrence management, whether the centre has access to multidisciplinary allergy or respiratory support, and what their approach is to long-term follow-up, since CRSwNP is a chronic condition that frequently requires ongoing monitoring even after successful treatment.
What documents do international patients need to share for a medical evaluation?
Share a concise medical summary, symptom timeline, previous diagnoses, investigation and imaging reports, procedure or biopsy reports where relevant, current medicines, allergies and related treatment records. Provide clear copies with translations when needed. The reviewing doctor may request additional information before giving an opinion.
How does GAF Healthcare help international patients plan treatment in India?
Our care coordination team can review the initial information, help identify suitable doctors and hospitals, request a medical opinion where available, explain next steps and indicative cost information, and support practical planning before travel. A remote opinion does not replace an in-person examination or emergency care.
