About Liver Failure / End-Stage Liver Disease doctors in India

This directory is based on doctors currently listed in GAF Healthcare's registry. Clinical suitability varies by patient; a doctor should review your history and investigations before any treatment decision.

About the Condition

What is Liver Failure / End-Stage Liver Disease?

End-stage liver disease (ESLD) occurs when years of cumulative liver damage — from causes such as chronic hepatitis B or C infection, alcohol-related liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD/NASH), autoimmune hepatitis, or inherited metabolic conditions — have left the liver unable to perform its essential functions. As functional liver tissue is progressively replaced by scar tissue (cirrhosis), the risk of life-threatening complications rises significantly, including internal bleeding from varices, fluid accumulation in the abdomen (ascites), hepatic encephalopathy, kidney failure, and liver cancer. Because the condition progresses at different rates and manifests differently in each person, its severity and urgency are determined through a thorough review of medical history, physical examination, laboratory markers, imaging, and validated scoring systems. Any care decisions must be made in close consultation with a qualified specialist based on an individual's full clinical picture.

Treatment options for Liver Failure / End-Stage Liver Disease

Care may include lifestyle changes, medical treatment, specialist review or a procedure, depending on the diagnosis, associated conditions and individual goals. The options below are associated with this condition in the GAF Healthcare directory.

Liver Transplant

Liver transplant is a surgical procedure to replace a diseased or failed liver with a healthy liver or part of a liver from a donor.

Why it may be consideredIt is recommended for patients with end-stage liver disease, decompensated cirrhosis, acute liver failure, or certain liver cancers confined to the liver. India is a leading global destination for liver transplant due to high success rates, experienced HPB surgical teams, and significantly lower costs compared to Western countries.

Common questions

FAQs about Liver Failure / End-Stage Liver Disease in India

What is Liver Failure / End-Stage Liver Disease?
Liver failure — in its end-stage form — refers to a state in which the liver has sustained irreversible or near-irreversible damage and can no longer adequately filter toxins, produce essential proteins, regulate clotting factors, or support normal metabolism. It represents the most advanced point on the spectrum of chronic liver disease and typically follows a prolonged period of cirrhosis.
What are the symptoms and health risks of Liver Failure / End-Stage Liver Disease?
Common symptoms and signs include persistent fatigue, yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), a distended abdomen due to fluid build-up, easy bruising or prolonged bleeding, confusion or changes in mental clarity (hepatic encephalopathy), muscle wasting, and dark urine. In more advanced stages, individuals may experience episodes of gastrointestinal bleeding or significant kidney impairment. It is important to note that the presence or absence of any of these symptoms does not establish a diagnosis — many can overlap with other conditions, and disease severity can only be properly assessed by a qualified clinician.
How is Liver Failure / End-Stage Liver Disease diagnosed?
Diagnosis and severity staging typically involve blood tests including liver function panels, serum bilirubin, albumin, INR (prothrombin time), creatinine, and full blood count, alongside imaging such as ultrasound, CT, or MRI to assess liver architecture and detect complications like portal hypertension or hepatocellular carcinoma. Two widely used scoring tools — the Child-Pugh score and the MELD score (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease) — help clinicians quantify liver function reserve and estimate prognosis, and the MELD score is used in many countries to prioritise patients on transplant waiting lists. In some cases, a liver biopsy may be performed to clarify the underlying cause or degree of fibrosis, though non-invasive methods such as elastography (FibroScan) are increasingly used in its place.
How is Liver Failure / End-Stage Liver Disease treated?
Treatment is highly individualised and depends on the underlying cause, the degree of liver dysfunction, the patient's overall health, and the presence of complications. In earlier or more stable stages, management focuses on addressing the root cause — such as antiviral therapy for hepatitis, complete alcohol cessation, or weight management — combined with medication to control complications like diuretics for ascites, lactulose for encephalopathy, and beta-blockers or endoscopic procedures to manage varices. For patients who progress to true end-stage disease and meet appropriate criteria, liver transplantation is the only definitive curative option and offers the prospect of restored liver function and significantly extended survival.
Can Liver Failure / End-Stage Liver Disease be treated without surgery?
Non-surgical management plays a meaningful role in earlier-stage chronic liver disease and in stabilising patients with compensated cirrhosis: this includes treating the underlying cause (e.g., antiviral medications, abstinence support, metabolic management), dietary modification, nutritional support, diuretic therapy, regular surveillance imaging for liver cancer, and endoscopic management of varices. However, once liver disease reaches a truly end-stage, decompensated state — particularly with recurrent or refractory complications — non-surgical measures become insufficient to reverse the condition, and transplant evaluation becomes necessary. There is no meaningful non-surgical pathway to cure end-stage liver failure; medical management at that point is primarily supportive and aimed at maintaining candidacy for transplantation.
When is Liver Transplant considered for Liver Failure / End-Stage Liver Disease?
Liver Transplant may be considered when conservative or medical options have not achieved enough improvement, or when the severity of the condition warrants it. The decision depends on clinical assessment, expected benefits and individual risks.
Which doctor treats Liver Failure / End-Stage Liver Disease?
End-stage liver disease is typically managed by a hepatologist (a physician specialising in liver conditions) working within a multidisciplinary team that includes transplant hepatologists, hepatobiliary and transplant surgeons, interventional radiologists, gastroenterologists, and specialist nursing and dietetic support. Transplant evaluation and listing require assessment at an accredited liver transplant centre.
How do I choose a doctor for Liver Failure / End-Stage Liver Disease?
When comparing care options, look for a centre with a high-volume, accredited liver transplant programme, a dedicated multidisciplinary transplant team, transparent outcomes data (including graft and patient survival rates), and robust protocols for post-transplant follow-up and immunosuppression management — particularly if you will be returning home after surgery.
What documents do international patients need to share for a medical evaluation?
Share a medical summary, investigation and imaging or biopsy reports where relevant, a current medication list, previous diagnoses and related treatment records. Provide clear copies with translation where needed.
How does GAF Healthcare help international patients plan treatment in India?
Our care coordination team helps review initial medical information, connect you with suitable doctors and hospitals, explain next steps and indicative estimates, and organise a treatment plan before travel.
