About Urethral stricture doctors in Delhi NCR, India

This directory is based on doctors currently listed in GAF Healthcare's registry. Clinical suitability varies by patient; a doctor should review your history and investigations before any treatment decision.

About the Condition

What is Urethral stricture?

A urethral stricture is a narrowing of the urethra — the tube that carries urine out of the body — caused by scar tissue that restricts normal urine flow. Left unmanaged, it can lead to serious complications including recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder dysfunction, urinary retention, and in severe cases kidney damage from back-pressure on the upper urinary tract. Risk factors include prior instrumentation or catheterisation, pelvic trauma, sexually transmitted infections (particularly gonorrhoea), inflammatory skin conditions such as lichen sclerosus, and previous urological surgery. A thorough assessment of medical history, symptom progression, and targeted investigations is essential before any treatment decision is made.

Treatment options for Urethral stricture

Care may include lifestyle changes, medical treatment, specialist review or a procedure, depending on the diagnosis, associated conditions and individual goals. The options below are associated with this condition in the GAF Healthcare directory.

Urethroplasty for urethral stricture

Urethroplasty is a reconstructive surgery performed to repair a narrowed segment (stricture) of the urethra that is causing obstructed urine flow, recurrent infections, or urinary retention.

Why it may be consideredDepending on the length and location of the stricture, surgeons either remove the narrowed segment and rejoin healthy urethra, or widen it using a graft of tissue (commonly from the inner cheek). It is considered the most durable, long-term solution for urethral stricture compared to repeated dilations or endoscopic procedures.

Key distinction: Most Popular

Urethral stricture repair

Urethral stricture repair treats abnormal narrowing of the urethra caused by scarring, which restricts urine flow and can lead to infections or kidney damage if untreated.

Why it may be consideredTreatment options range from minimally invasive endoscopic procedures to reconstructive urethroplasty, chosen based on stricture length, location, and recurrence history. The goal is to restore a wide, durable urinary channel and improve quality of life.

Key distinction: Minimally Invasive

Common questions

FAQs about Urethral stricture in Delhi NCR, India

What is Urethral stricture?
A urethral stricture is a pathological narrowing of the urethra caused by fibrotic scar tissue, which partially or completely obstructs the flow of urine from the bladder to the outside of the body.
What are the symptoms and health risks of Urethral stricture?
Common symptoms include a weak or slow urine stream, difficulty initiating urination, a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying, increased urinary frequency or urgency, and in some cases urinary retention or recurrent infections. Over time, obstructed flow can place strain on the bladder and kidneys, contributing to more serious complications if not addressed. It is important to note that these symptoms overlap with several other urological conditions, and symptoms alone are not sufficient to confirm a diagnosis.
How is Urethral stricture diagnosed?
Diagnosis typically begins with a detailed clinical history and flow-rate measurement (uroflowmetry), which can objectively quantify the degree of obstruction. Retrograde urethrogram (RUG) and/or voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) are the primary imaging studies used to identify the location, length, and density of the stricture — factors that directly guide treatment planning. In some cases, cystoscopy (direct visual inspection of the urethra) and ultrasound assessment of urethral anatomy are also used; the stricture's characteristics — particularly its length and location (bulbar, penile, or posterior urethra) — are central to determining the most appropriate management.
How is Urethral stricture treated?
Treatment options range from minimally invasive endoscopic procedures to open reconstructive surgery, and the most appropriate approach depends on the stricture's length, location, density, and the patient's history of prior treatment. For short, less fibrotic strictures, urethral dilation or direct vision internal urethrotomy (DVIU) may be performed, though recurrence rates with these techniques are well documented and depend heavily on stricture characteristics. For longer, recurrent, or complex strictures, urethroplasty — open surgical reconstruction of the urethra, sometimes using tissue grafts — offers significantly higher long-term success rates and is considered the gold-standard approach by most reconstructive urologists; individual outcomes depend on clinical factors assessed by a qualified specialist.
Can Urethral stricture be treated without surgery?
Truly non-surgical management of a urethral stricture is limited: clean intermittent self-catheterisation (CISC) can maintain urinary drainage and may slow progression in selected patients who are not surgical candidates, but it does not resolve the underlying scarring. Urethral dilation — while minimally invasive — is a procedural intervention that provides temporary relief for many patients, with a high likelihood of recurrence requiring repeat treatment. There is currently no medication or lifestyle change proven to reverse urethral scar tissue, so patients whose symptoms are causing meaningful obstruction will generally require some form of procedural or surgical intervention, as determined by their treating urologist.
When is Urethroplasty for urethral stricture considered for Urethral stricture?
Urethroplasty for urethral stricture may be considered when conservative or medical options have not achieved enough improvement, or when the severity of the condition warrants it. The decision depends on clinical assessment, expected benefits and individual risks.
Which doctor treats Urethral stricture?
Urethral strictures are evaluated and managed by a urologist, and complex or recurrent cases are best handled by a reconstructive urologist — a subspecialist with dedicated training in urethral and genital reconstructive surgery. In cases involving complications such as bladder dysfunction or upper tract involvement, a multidisciplinary team including a functional urologist or nephrologist may also be involved.
How do I choose a doctor for Urethral stricture?
When selecting a specialist, it is worth asking about their specific volume and experience with urethroplasty and other urethral reconstruction techniques, their access to tissue-grafting expertise, and whether their centre offers long-term follow-up with uroflowmetry and imaging to monitor for recurrence. Hospital affiliation, post-operative support, and clear communication about realistic success rates and the possibility of further treatment are also important factors to discuss.
What documents do international patients need to share for a medical evaluation?
Share a medical summary, investigation and imaging or biopsy reports where relevant, a current medication list, previous diagnoses and related treatment records. Provide clear copies with translation where needed.
How does GAF Healthcare help international patients plan treatment in India?
Our care coordination team helps review initial medical information, connect you with suitable doctors and hospitals, explain next steps and indicative estimates, and organise a treatment plan before travel.
