This directory is based on doctors currently listed in GAF Healthcare's registry. Clinical suitability varies by patient; a doctor should review your history and investigations before any treatment decision.

About the Condition

What is Cervical cancer?

Cervical cancer develops in the cells lining the cervix — the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina — and is one of the most common gynaecological cancers worldwide, yet also one of the most preventable when caught early. The vast majority of cases are linked to persistent infection with high-risk strains of human papillomavirus (HPV), though other factors such as smoking, long-term use of oral contraceptives, a weakened immune system, and a history of multiple sexual partners can increase risk. Left undetected or untreated, cervical cancer can spread to surrounding pelvic structures, lymph nodes, and more distant organs, significantly affecting quality of life and prognosis. A thorough assessment — including medical and gynaecological history, physical examination, and relevant investigations — is essential to determine the extent of disease and guide appropriate care.

Treatment options for Cervical cancer

Care may include lifestyle changes, medical treatment, specialist review or a procedure, depending on the diagnosis, associated conditions and individual goals. The options below are associated with this condition in the GAF Healthcare directory.

Radical Hysterectomy with Pelvic Lymphadenectomy

Radical Hysterectomy with Pelvic Lymphadenectomy is a major cancer surgery performed for early-stage cervical cancer, involving removal of the uterus, cervix, upper part of the vagina, surrounding tissue (parametrium), and pelvic lymph nodes.

Why it may be consideredThe procedure aims to completely remove cancerous tissue while assessing lymph node involvement to guide further treatment. It is typically performed by a gynecologic oncologist in a specialized cancer care center.

Key distinction: Most Common

Intracavitary Brachytherapy

Intracavitary Brachytherapy (ICBT) is a form of internal radiation therapy used mainly in the treatment of cervical cancer, where a radioactive source is placed directly inside the cervix and vagina via an applicator.

Why it may be consideredIt allows a very high dose of radiation to be delivered precisely to the tumor while sparing surrounding healthy tissues such as the bladder and rectum. It is typically given after external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) as part of a curative treatment plan.

Key distinction: Most Advanced

Common questions

FAQs about Cervical cancer in Delhi NCR, India

What is Cervical cancer?
Cervical cancer is a malignant tumour arising from the cells of the cervix, most commonly triggered by long-term infection with oncogenic (cancer-causing) strains of HPV. It ranges from early, highly treatable lesions to more advanced disease requiring complex, multi-modal treatment.
What are the symptoms and health risks of Cervical cancer?
Early-stage cervical cancer often causes no noticeable symptoms, which is why routine screening is so important; when symptoms do appear they may include abnormal vaginal bleeding (between periods, after intercourse, or after menopause), unusual vaginal discharge, or pelvic pain. More advanced disease can cause pain in the lower back or legs, swelling of the legs, or difficulty with bladder and bowel function. The presence or absence of these symptoms alone is not sufficient to establish or rule out a diagnosis — a formal clinical evaluation is always necessary.
How is Cervical cancer diagnosed?
Diagnosis typically begins with a pelvic examination and cervical screening (such as a Pap smear or liquid-based cytology), often followed by colposcopy and targeted biopsy if abnormal cells are detected. Confirmed cancer is then staged — most commonly using the FIGO (International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics) staging system — which takes into account tumour size, depth of invasion, and spread to lymph nodes or distant sites, assessed through imaging such as MRI, CT, or PET-CT. HPV genotyping and, in some centres, surgical lymph node evaluation may also inform the treatment plan; the exact investigations recommended will depend on individual clinical findings.
How is Cervical cancer treated?
Treatment for cervical cancer depends on the stage at diagnosis, the patient's age, overall health, and whether fertility preservation is a consideration. Early-stage disease (particularly pre-invasive or microinvasive lesions) may be managed with minimally invasive excisional procedures such as LLETZ/LEEP or cone biopsy, while localised invasive cancers are frequently treated with radical hysterectomy or with concurrent chemoradiotherapy — a combination of external beam radiation and chemotherapy, often followed by intracavitary brachytherapy to deliver a precise high dose to the cervix and surrounding tissue. Advanced or recurrent disease may require additional systemic therapies, including chemotherapy, targeted agents, or immunotherapy, and all treatment decisions should be made collaboratively with a qualified specialist based on a full individual assessment.
Can Cervical cancer be treated without surgery?
Non-surgical pathways play a central and well-established role in cervical cancer management: concurrent chemoradiotherapy (external beam radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy, typically cisplatin-based) followed by intracavitary brachytherapy is a standard curative-intent treatment for locally advanced disease and is considered equivalent in outcome to surgery for many patients. Immunotherapy and targeted therapy are emerging non-surgical options for recurrent or metastatic disease. That said, the appropriateness of any non-surgical approach — and whether it is used alone or combined with surgery — depends entirely on individual staging and clinical assessment.
When is Radical Hysterectomy with Pelvic Lymphadenectomy considered for Cervical cancer?
Radical Hysterectomy with Pelvic Lymphadenectomy may be considered when conservative or medical options have not achieved enough improvement, or when the severity of the condition warrants it. The decision depends on clinical assessment, expected benefits and individual risks.
Which doctor treats Cervical cancer?
Cervical cancer is typically managed by a gynaecologic oncologist (for surgical evaluation and overall case management) working alongside a radiation oncologist (who oversees external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy) and a medical oncologist (who manages systemic chemotherapy and immunotherapy). Care at a centre with a dedicated multidisciplinary gynaecological oncology tumour board is strongly advisable.
How do I choose a doctor for Cervical cancer?
When selecting a provider, look for a gynaecologic oncologist or radiation oncologist with documented experience in cervical cancer treatment — including intracavitary brachytherapy if that modality is likely to be part of your care — affiliated with a centre that offers multidisciplinary tumour board review, advanced imaging, and structured long-term follow-up for surveillance and management of potential late effects.
What documents do international patients need to share for a medical evaluation?
Share a medical summary, investigation and imaging or biopsy reports where relevant, a current medication list, previous diagnoses and related treatment records. Provide clear copies with translation where needed.
How does GAF Healthcare help international patients plan treatment in India?
Our care coordination team helps review initial medical information, connect you with suitable doctors and hospitals, explain next steps and indicative estimates, and organise a treatment plan before travel.
