However, biliary strictures that cause meaningful obstruction generally do require an interventional or surgical approach to relieve the blockage and prevent ongoing liver injury — there is limited evidence that medical management alone can resolve an established mechanical stricture, and a gastroenterologist or hepatobiliary surgeon should advise on whether watchful waiting is appropriate in any individual case.
