Dr. Vivek Vij

Dr. Vivek Vij is a pioneering liver transplant surgeon credited with developing living donor liver surgery in India and standardising safety protocols that have achieved a 100% donor safety profile since the inception of the programme. He is the first surgeon from the Indian subcontinent to publish a series of laparoscopic donor hepatectomies in the journal Liver Transplantation.

He is the founder of Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Sciences in the Fortis group of Hospitals, having started a highly successful liver transplant programme initially at the Fortis Noida centre and later at Fortis Mohali. He currently serves as Chairman & HOD — Liver Transplant & GI Surgery at Fortis Escorts Liver & Digestive Diseases Institute, Okhla, New Delhi.

Dr. Vij and his team have a cumulative experience of more than 2,500 liver transplants — having performed the majority of these at Fortis Hospital, Noida — with a 95% patient and safe donor surgery record. He has the credit of one of the lowest biliary complication rates (<5%) in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in the world. His expertise is well known not only in India but also in many Asian, SAARC and African countries, including Mongolia, Pakistan, Iraq, and the CAS countries. He has published and presented his work in multiple national and international forums and journals.
