Dr. Pradeep Chowbey

Dr. Pradeep Chowbey is a true pioneer of minimally invasive and bariatric surgery in India. As chairman of the bariatric and minimal access surgery division at Max Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi, he has spent more than three decades transforming how India approaches surgical intervention for obesity, hernias, and gastrointestinal disease.

He is credited with performing the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy in India in 1990, at a time when the technique was still emerging globally. That landmark procedure opened the door to a new era of surgery in the country — one where incisions are small, recovery is faster, and the physiological impact on the patient is dramatically reduced. Over the three decades that followed, Dr. Chowbey performed over 30,000 laparoscopic procedures across the full range of abdominal surgery.
