What is Balloon Mitral Valvotomy?
Balloon mitral valvotomy, also called PTMC or BMV, uses a balloon across a stenotic mitral valve to split fused commissures, most often in rheumatic mitral stenosis with suitable anatomy. After transseptal puncture, an Inoue or equivalent balloon is positioned across the mitral valve and inflated in a stepwise fashion while residual gradient and new regurgitation are watched.
