What Is Biliary Stenting?
Biliary stenting places a plastic or metal tube through an endoscope, usually during ERCP, to drain a blocked bile duct caused by stone, stricture or selected tumours.
During ERCP, the duct is cannulated and a guidewire is placed. The chosen stent is deployed across the stricture or after stone work. Cholangioscopy is not assumed.
Stenting relieves selected obstruction; it does not remove every stone or treat the underlying cancer. PTBD is a different CMS procedure when ERCP cannot reach the duct. Plastic and metal stents are not interchangeable quotes.
