When patients from Vanuatu need treatment overseas

Vanuatu's hospitals handle primary care, maternity, emergency medicine and general surgery. What a country of 330,000 people cannot sustain is the case volume that specialist services require, and that is a question of scale rather than skill.

Cardiac surgery is not performed in Vanuatu. Neither is cancer treatment with radiotherapy, nor organ transplantation. Several specialties depend on visiting teams from Australia and New Caledonia who come once or twice a year.

For those conditions, treatment means travelling. The Ministry of Health operates an overseas referral system, and Australian and New Zealand programmes fund treatment for eligible patients. Where they apply, they are the right route.

If the funded schemes cannot take you

Funded referral is not automatic. A national committee assesses each case, and the regional schemes apply clinical criteria — including an expected prognosis threshold and exclusion where significant co-existing illness is present.

Patients are also referred first within Vanuatu, which means reaching Port Vila or Luganville before any overseas decision begins. For families on outer islands that is a journey in itself.

If you have been assessed and not accepted, or told the wait is longer than your condition allows, treatment in India becomes worth understanding. It is self-funded, but it is available on your timeline rather than a committee's.

Why India rather than closer options

Cost is the honest answer. Self-funded private treatment in Australia or New Zealand is beyond most families in Vanuatu. A cardiac bypass at an accredited Indian hospital is quoted at around US$5,500, a fraction of the equivalent in the region.

Capability is the second answer. India treats over 700,000 international patients a year, and its major transplant and cardiac units operate at volumes that produce genuine surgical experience.

And English is the working language of Indian hospital medicine, which removes a barrier that matters for a country where English is one of the official languages.

Healthcare quality and accreditation

Accreditation is the one quality signal an international patient can check independently. Joint Commission International accreditation involves external audit of clinical protocols, infection control, medication safety and patient rights.

Fewer than 1% of hospitals worldwide hold it. Apollo, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Medanta and Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital are among the Indian hospitals that do, alongside India's national NABH standard.

Ask two questions of any hospital anywhere: how many of these operations does this surgeon perform each year, and what is the unit's complication rate. GAF Healthcare will ask on your behalf before you commit.

India and Vanuatu — an existing health relationship

India and Vanuatu already cooperate on health. Under the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation, India committed a haemodialysis unit and sea ambulances to Vanuatu, both accepted by the government.

India has also extended sponsorship for Vanuatu patients to be treated in Indian hospitals, part of a wider Pacific health programme covering several island states.

If you think your case might fall under a government-to-government arrangement, ask the Ministry of Health directly. That route is not something a facilitator can arrange, and it costs you nothing to ask.

Getting there, and the visa

There are no direct flights. The route runs Port Vila to Brisbane or Sydney, then on to India via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or a Gulf hub. Plan on 24 to 30 hours including connections.

Because the journey crosses Australia, transit requirements should be checked before booking. Indian visa applications are made online at indianvisaonline.gov.in, with the High Commission of India in Wellington accredited to Vanuatu.

Planning for the journey home

The length of the return journey shapes everything. A patient who would fly home two weeks after knee replacement from a nearby country needs closer to three weeks before a multi-leg trip is sensible.
