- Dilation and Curettage (D&C) is a two-stage operative procedure in which the cervical os is progressively dilated using graduated Hegar or Pratt dilators, and the endometrial lining or retained products of conception are then systematically removed using a sharp or suction curette.
- It is one of the oldest and most widely studied procedures in gynaecology, yet remains clinically indispensable for a defined set of uterine conditions.
- When performed under direct hysteroscopic visualisation — the contemporary gold standard — the procedure achieves both diagnostic and therapeutic objectives simultaneously, eliminating the blind-curettage limitation that historically resulted in incomplete evacuation or missed focal pathology.
