- The human heart contains four valves — mitral, aortic, tricuspid, and pulmonary — each acting as a one-way gate that directs blood flow through the cardiac chambers and into the systemic and pulmonary circulations.
- Valvular heart disease arises when one or more of these structures develops stenosis (narrowing that restricts forward flow) or regurgitation (incompetence that allows backward leakage), or both simultaneously in mixed disease.
- The two most clinically significant lesions requiring surgical intervention are severe aortic stenosis (most commonly degenerative calcific disease in patients over 65) and severe mitral regurgitation (rheumatic, myxomatous, or ischemic etiology).
