What is Colposcopy?
Colposcopy is a diagnostic gynaecological procedure in which a specialized magnifying instrument called a colposcope is used to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva for abnormal cells, often following an unclear or abnormal Pap smear. It helps detect precancerous changes, HPV-related lesions, inflammation, or other cervical abnormalities at an early, treatable stage. The procedure is quick, performed on an outpatient basis, and may include a targeted biopsy for further evaluation.
Who may be considered?
Colposcopy may be considered after a qualified specialist reviews your reports and medical history. Suitability varies from person to person and must be assessed by your treating doctor.
How does it work?
A magnified visual examination of the cervix using acetic acid and/or iodine solution to identify abnormal areas, without tissue sampling.

Recovery and follow-up
Most patients resume normal activities within a day; if a biopsy was taken, mild spotting or discharge may occur for a few days, and intercourse and tampon use should be avoided until healing is complete. A follow-up visit is scheduled to review histopathology results and plan any further treatment if needed.
Risks
Colposcopy is a low-risk procedure; possible complications include mild discomfort, light bleeding, infection, or, rarely, excessive bleeding after biopsy. Serious complications are uncommon.
Alternatives
Depending on findings, alternatives or complementary approaches may include repeat Pap smear surveillance, HPV testing, or direct treatment procedures such as LEEP, cryotherapy, or cone biopsy if significant abnormalities are already suspected.

How we selected these doctors
A doctor appears on this page when their listed specialty maps to Gynaecology and their profile names colposcopy (or a matching term) among the procedures they perform. Doctors are not ranked by a proprietary "best" score — the order follows years of listed experience (highest first), the same field shown on each doctor's profile. This page does not display aggregate star ratings.

Relevant specialty
gynaecology expertise is mapped from the doctor's listed specialty and profile information.
Procedure relevance
colposcopy is listed among the doctor's procedures or areas of expertise, using matching terms where appropriate.
Hospital affiliation
The doctor is currently affiliated with a recognised hospital in the GAF directory. Hospital details and availability can change, so confirm them before booking.
Professional experience
Experience is displayed from the doctor's available professional profile and is used as the ordering signal when the page lists doctors.
Data verification
Doctor and hospital information is checked against the records available to GAF and updated when new information is supplied. It is not a substitute for confirming credentials directly.
