What is Cytoreductive Surgery and HIPEC?

Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) combined with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a specialized two-stage treatment for ovarian cancer that has spread within the abdominal cavity (peritoneal carcinomatosis). The surgeon first removes all visible tumor deposits from the abdominal organs and lining, after which heated chemotherapy is circulated directly in the abdominal cavity to destroy microscopic residual cancer cells.
