What is Brain Aneurysm Clipping?
Brain aneurysm clipping is a microsurgical procedure in which a neurosurgeon places a small metal clip across the neck of a bulging, weakened blood vessel in the brain to stop blood flow into it and prevent rupture or re-bleeding. It is performed for both ruptured aneurysms (as an emergency) and unruptured aneurysms found incidentally that carry a significant risk of bleeding. The goal is to permanently seal off the aneurysm while preserving normal blood flow to the surrounding brain tissue.

Recovery and follow-up

Risks
As with any brain surgery, risks include bleeding, infection, stroke, temporary or permanent neurological deficits, seizures, and rarely, anesthesia-related complications; the treating neurosurgical team will discuss individual risk based on aneurysm location and patient health. Ruptured aneurysm cases carry additional risks related to the initial hemorrhage, such as vasospasm and hydrocephalus.
Alternatives
Endovascular coiling or flow-diversion stenting are minimally invasive alternatives to open clipping for suitable aneurysm shapes and locations, performed by an interventional neuroradiologist through the blood vessels rather than open surgery. For very small, stable, unruptured aneurysms, careful observation with periodic imaging may also be considered instead of immediate treatment.
