What is Arteriovenous malformation embolization?
Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) embolization is a minimally invasive endovascular procedure in which a neurointerventionalist blocks the abnormal tangle of blood vessels using specialized glue, particles, or liquid embolic agents delivered through a catheter. It is performed to reduce the risk of hemorrhage, shrink the AVM before surgery or radiosurgery, or, in select cases, achieve complete cure. The procedure is done under advanced neuro-angiography imaging by a specialized neurosurgery/interventional neuroradiology team.

Recovery and follow-up
Most patients are monitored in the ICU for 24-48 hours post-procedure, followed by a short hospital stay; mild headache and fatigue are common, and a follow-up angiogram or MRI is typically scheduled at 3-6 months to assess AVM occlusion. Strenuous activity and travel should be avoided for at least 2-3 weeks after the procedure.
Risks
Potential risks include bleeding or hemorrhage during/after the procedure, stroke, vessel perforation, incomplete occlusion requiring further treatment, and rarely, neurological deficits. A specialized neuro-team and advanced imaging significantly reduce, but do not eliminate, these risks.

Alternatives include microsurgical resection, stereotactic radiosurgery (Gamma Knife/CyberKnife), or a combination of these with embolization, as well as conservative management with observation for small, asymptomatic AVMs.
