About Multiple Myeloma doctors in Hyderabad, India

This directory is based on doctors currently listed in GAF Healthcare's registry. Clinical suitability varies by patient; a doctor should review your history and investigations before any treatment decision.

About the Condition

What is Multiple Myeloma?

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells — a type of white blood cell found in the bone marrow — that causes these cells to multiply abnormally and crowd out healthy blood cell production. Over time, the disease can damage bones, impair kidney function, weaken the immune system, and lead to anaemia, all of which significantly affect quality of life and overall health. Complications such as hypercalcaemia, spinal cord compression, and recurrent infections are recognised risks that require close monitoring and timely management. A thorough assessment, including a detailed medical history, physical examination, and targeted investigations, is essential before any treatment plan can be established.

Treatment options for Multiple Myeloma

Care may include lifestyle changes, medical treatment, specialist review or a procedure, depending on the diagnosis, associated conditions and individual goals. The options below are associated with this condition in the GAF Healthcare directory.

Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant

Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant (also called Autologous Stem Cell Transplant) is a procedure in which a patient's own blood-forming stem cells are collected, stored, and reinfused after high-dose chemotherapy to rebuild healthy bone marrow.

Why it may be consideredIt is a standard consolidation treatment for eligible Multiple Myeloma patients who have responded to induction chemotherapy, aiming to deepen remission and prolong disease-free survival. The procedure is performed in a specialized transplant unit with close monitoring for infection and blood count recovery.

Key distinction: Most Popular

Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation

Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation (ASCT) is a treatment for multiple myeloma and certain other blood cancers in which a patient's own stem cells are collected, high-dose chemotherapy is given to destroy diseased bone marrow, and the stored stem cells are then reinfused to rebuild healthy marrow function.

Why it may be consideredIt is considered a standard-of-care consolidation therapy for eligible myeloma patients after initial induction chemotherapy, aiming to achieve deeper and longer-lasting disease remission. India offers this procedure at leading BMT centers with internationally trained hematologists at a fraction of Western costs.

Key distinction: Most Common

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is a systemic cancer treatment that uses potent drugs to destroy or slow the growth of cancer cells, either as a standalone treatment or combined with surgery and radiation therapy.

Why it may be consideredIt is typically administered in cycles over several weeks to months, tailored to the cancer type, stage, and patient's overall health. GAF Healthcare connects international patients with leading Indian oncology centers offering world-class chemotherapy protocols at a fraction of Western costs.

Key distinction: Most Common

Targeted Therapy

Targeted therapy uses drugs designed to specifically identify and attack cancer cells based on genetic mutations, proteins, or receptors, while sparing normal healthy cells.

Why it may be consideredIt is used across breast, lung, colorectal, gastric, liver, pancreatic, prostate, ovarian, head & neck cancers, leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, often guided by biomarker or genomic testing. India offers internationally accredited cancer centres with access to the latest targeted agents at a fraction of Western costs.

Key distinction: Essential First Step

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy uses drugs that help the patient's own immune system recognize and destroy cancer cells, and is used across many cancers including breast, lung, colorectal, gastric/esophageal, liver/pancreatic, ovarian/gynaecological, head & neck cancers, leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.

Why it may be consideredIt is given as an infusion in cycles, either alone or combined with chemotherapy/targeted therapy, and India offers globally approved immunotherapy drugs and advanced options like CAR-T cell therapy at a fraction of Western costs. Treatment plans are individualized based on tumor type, biomarker status (e.g., PD-L1, MSI), and stage of disease.

Key distinction: Most Common

Stem Cell Transplant

A Stem Cell Transplant (Bone Marrow Transplant) replaces diseased or damaged bone marrow with healthy stem cells, allowing the body to produce normal blood cells again.

Why it may be consideredIt is a key curative or disease-controlling treatment for blood cancers such as Leukemia, Lymphoma, and Multiple Myeloma, especially after chemotherapy has reduced disease burden. India offers internationally accredited transplant units with experienced hemato-oncology teams at a fraction of Western costs.

Common questions

FAQs about Multiple Myeloma in Hyderabad, India

What is Multiple Myeloma?
Multiple myeloma is a cancer in which abnormal plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow, producing excess proteins (called M-proteins or paraproteins) that can damage organs and disrupt normal blood cell production. It is considered a haematological malignancy and, while not currently curable in most cases, it is treatable and can often be managed effectively for many years.
What are the symptoms and health risks of Multiple Myeloma?
Common symptoms include persistent bone pain (particularly in the back, ribs, or hips), unexplained fatigue, frequent infections, easy bruising or bleeding, and signs of kidney problems such as increased thirst or reduced urine output. Some people experience numbness or weakness in the limbs if the disease affects the spine, and elevated calcium levels can cause confusion, nausea, or constipation. These symptoms overlap with many other conditions, and their presence alone is not sufficient to establish a diagnosis of multiple myeloma.
How is Multiple Myeloma diagnosed?
Diagnosis typically involves blood and urine tests to detect abnormal proteins (including serum protein electrophoresis, immunofixation, and free light chain assay), a full blood count, kidney and calcium level checks, and bone marrow biopsy to confirm the presence and proportion of malignant plasma cells. Imaging — such as whole-body low-dose CT, MRI, or PET-CT — is used to assess bone involvement and detect lesions. Disease severity is stratified using established staging systems such as the Revised International Staging System (R-ISS), which incorporates albumin, beta-2 microglobulin, LDH levels, and cytogenetic risk markers to guide prognosis and treatment decisions.
How is Multiple Myeloma treated?
Treatment is highly individualised and depends on factors including disease stage, cytogenetic risk profile, the patient's age, fitness, and organ function. For eligible patients, high-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation (using the patient's own stem cells) is a standard approach that can deepen and prolong remission. Alongside or instead of transplant, treatment may include combinations of targeted therapies (such as proteasome inhibitors or IMiDs), immunotherapy (including monoclonal antibodies), and conventional chemotherapy, with the specific regimen determined by a qualified specialist based on individual assessment.
Can Multiple Myeloma be treated without surgery?
For patients who are not eligible for stem cell transplantation — due to age, fitness level, or other health conditions — effective non-procedural management is available using combinations of oral or intravenous targeted agents, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy. Supportive care measures, including bisphosphonates to protect bone health, growth factors to address anaemia, and prophylactic antibiotics to reduce infection risk, form an important part of ongoing management for all patients regardless of transplant eligibility. Active monitoring (sometimes called 'watch and wait') may be appropriate for asymptomatic precursor states such as smouldering myeloma, but this decision must be made by a specialist following careful individual assessment.
When is Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant considered for Multiple Myeloma?
Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant may be considered when conservative or medical options have not achieved enough improvement, or when the severity of the condition warrants it. The decision depends on clinical assessment, expected benefits and individual risks.
Which doctor treats Multiple Myeloma?
Multiple myeloma is typically evaluated and managed by a haematologist or medical oncologist with specific expertise in haematological malignancies. For patients being considered for stem cell transplantation, care is coordinated through a specialist in bone marrow transplantation, usually within a multidisciplinary team that may also include nephrologists, radiologists, and specialist nurses.
How do I choose a doctor for Multiple Myeloma?
When selecting a specialist or facility, it is worth asking about the centre's volume and experience specifically in treating multiple myeloma, whether they offer access to a full multidisciplinary team, availability of novel and clinical-trial therapies, and what structured follow-up and relapse monitoring looks like over the long term.
What documents do international patients need to share for a medical evaluation?
Share a medical summary, investigation and imaging or biopsy reports where relevant, a current medication list, previous diagnoses and related treatment records. Provide clear copies with translation where needed.
How does GAF Healthcare help international patients plan treatment in India?
Our care coordination team helps review initial medical information, connect you with suitable doctors and hospitals, explain next steps and indicative estimates, and organise a treatment plan before travel.
