Why consider treatment in India?
Many international patients consider India for early-stage skin cancer treatment for several reasons, including:
More affordable estimates
Competitive indicative costs compared with many other countries, for similar clinical standards.
Internationally accredited hospitals
Hospitals experienced in treating international patients.
Experienced specialists
Doctors who regularly manage similar cases.
Care coordination support
A team to help with planning, medical translation and follow-up.
What is Mohs Micrographic Surgery?
Mohs Micrographic Surgery is a precise, tissue-sparing surgical technique used to remove early-stage skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, particularly on the face, ears, and other cosmetically or functionally sensitive areas. During the procedure, thin layers of skin are removed and examined under a microscope in real time until no cancer cells remain, ensuring complete removal while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. It offers the highest cure rates among skin cancer treatments and minimizes scarring compared to conventional excision.
Who may be considered?
Mohs Micrographic Surgery may be considered after a qualified specialist reviews your reports and medical history. Suitability varies from person to person and must be assessed by your treating doctor.
How does it work?
The tumor is removed layer by layer under local anesthesia, with each layer mapped and examined microscopically on-site until the margins are completely clear of cancer cells.
Standard Mohs Micrographic Surgery
Gold StandardThe tumor is removed layer by layer under local anesthesia, with each layer mapped and examined microscopically on-site until the margins are completely clear of cancer cells.
Comprehensive Investigations
Skin biopsy with histopathology, dermoscopy, CBC, coagulation profile, ECG (for elderly patients), high-resolution ultrasound of the lesion if deep invasion suspected
Treatment / Procedure Estimate
Stay in India
Usually Included in Hospital Package
- Consultation with dermatologic surgeon/oncologist
- Local anesthesia and surgical procedure
- On-site frozen section pathology processing
- Wound closure or reconstruction (if needed)
- Post-operative dressing and follow-up visit
Usually Not Included
- International and domestic travel
- Hotel/accommodation beyond hospital stay
- Advanced reconstructive/flap surgery if extensive defect
- Long-term dermatology follow-up after discharge
- Visa and travel insurance
Recovery and follow-up
Most patients can resume light activities within a few days, with full wound healing typically taking 2-4 weeks depending on the size and location of the surgical site; regular follow-up with a dermatologist is recommended to monitor scarring and check for recurrence.
Risks
Potential risks include bleeding, infection, scarring, temporary or rare permanent nerve damage, and, in a small percentage of cases, incomplete tumor removal requiring further treatment.
Alternatives
Alternative treatments for early-stage skin cancer include standard surgical excision, curettage and electrodesiccation, radiotherapy, and topical or photodynamic therapy, though these generally offer lower cure rates or less tissue preservation compared to Mohs surgery.

Share whatever you have — the care team will confirm the final checklist after reviewing your case.

- Complete blood count (CBC) and coagulation profile
- List of current medications, especially blood thinners
- Prior skin cancer treatment history, if any

- Whether this is a primary tumor or a recurrence
- Any known allergies, especially to local anesthesia
- History of immunosuppression or organ transplant
- Cosmetic concerns or functional areas near the lesion (eyes, nose, lips)
