About the Condition

What is Ovarian Cancer?

Ovarian cancer arises when malignant cells develop in one or both ovaries, and it is among the most serious gynaecological cancers because it frequently reaches an advanced stage before causing noticeable symptoms. The disease can spread to the peritoneal cavity, lymph nodes, and distant organs, making early detection a significant clinical challenge. Risk factors include increasing age, a personal or family history of ovarian or breast cancer, BRCA1/BRCA2 gene mutations, endometriosis, and nulliparity, although the condition can occur without any identifiable risk factor. A thorough assessment—including imaging, blood tumour markers, and often tissue biopsy—is essential before any treatment plan can be determined for an individual patient.

Treatment options for Ovarian Cancer

Care may include lifestyle changes, medical treatment, specialist review or a procedure, depending on the diagnosis, associated conditions and individual goals. The options below are associated with this condition in the GAF Healthcare directory.

Ovarian Cancer Debulking Surgery

Ovarian Cancer Debulking Surgery, also called cytoreductive surgery, is a major operation to remove ovarian tumors along with as much visible cancer as possible from the pelvis and abdomen.

Why it may be consideredIt is typically performed either as the first line of treatment or after a few cycles of chemotherapy, and is a cornerstone of ovarian cancer management aimed at improving survival and quality of life. The extent of surgery depends on the stage and spread of the disease, and may involve removal of the uterus, ovaries, omentum, lymph nodes, and parts of the bowel or peritoneum.

Key distinction: Most Common

Cytoreductive Surgery and HIPEC

Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) combined with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a specialized two-stage treatment for ovarian cancer that has spread within the abdominal cavity (peritoneal carcinomatosis).

Why it may be consideredThe surgeon first removes all visible tumor deposits from the abdominal organs and lining, after which heated chemotherapy is circulated directly in the abdominal cavity to destroy microscopic residual cancer cells. This combined approach aims to achieve long-term disease control in selected patients with advanced or recurrent ovarian cancer.

Common questions

FAQs about Ovarian Cancer in Delhi NCR, India

What is Ovarian Cancer?
Ovarian cancer is a malignant tumour originating in the ovarian tissue; the most common type is epithelial ovarian cancer, though rarer forms such as germ-cell and stromal tumours also occur.
What are the symptoms and health risks of Ovarian Cancer?
Early-stage ovarian cancer is often asymptomatic or causes only vague complaints such as bloating, pelvic or abdominal discomfort, a feeling of fullness when eating, and increased urinary frequency. As the disease progresses, symptoms may include unintentional weight loss, fatigue, abdominal swelling due to fluid accumulation (ascites), and changes in bowel habits. These symptoms overlap with many benign conditions, so their presence alone is not sufficient to establish a diagnosis.
How is Ovarian Cancer diagnosed?
Evaluation typically begins with a gynaecological examination and pelvic ultrasound, followed by cross-sectional imaging such as CT or MRI to assess tumour extent and potential spread. Blood tests measuring tumour markers—most commonly CA-125, and sometimes HE4 or the ROMA index—provide additional diagnostic information, though they are interpreted alongside clinical findings rather than in isolation. Definitive diagnosis requires histopathological confirmation from a tissue sample, and formal staging (FIGO I–IV) determined at surgery guides subsequent treatment decisions.
How is Ovarian Cancer treated?
Treatment strategy is determined by the cancer's FIGO stage, histological type and grade, the patient's overall health, and the extent of peritoneal involvement. For many patients, the primary approach combines cytoreductive (debulking) surgery—aimed at removing as much tumour as possible—with platinum-based chemotherapy, administered either before surgery (neoadjuvant) or after (adjuvant). In selected cases of peritoneal spread, cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) may be considered, and targeted therapies such as PARP inhibitors or bevacizumab may be incorporated depending on molecular tumour characteristics; all decisions depend on individual clinical assessment.
Can Ovarian Cancer be treated without surgery?
Systemic chemotherapy is a central component of treatment at most stages and may be used as the primary approach when surgery is not immediately feasible or when the disease is metastatic and not amenable to complete resection. Targeted agents, hormone therapy (for certain stromal tumour types), and immunotherapy are additional medical options in appropriate clinical contexts. While non-surgical pathways play a meaningful role, complete surgical cytoreduction combined with chemotherapy remains the standard of care for most patients with advanced-stage disease, and a non-surgical-only approach is generally reserved for situations where surgery carries prohibitive risk or the patient declines operative intervention.
When is Ovarian Cancer Debulking Surgery considered for Ovarian Cancer?
Ovarian Cancer Debulking Surgery may be considered when conservative or medical options have not achieved enough improvement, or when the severity of the condition warrants it. The decision depends on clinical assessment, expected benefits and individual risks.
Which doctor treats Ovarian Cancer?
Ovarian cancer is typically managed by a gynaecological oncologist as the lead specialist, working within a multidisciplinary team that may include a surgical oncologist with peritoneal surface disease expertise (particularly when HIPEC is being considered), a medical oncologist, a radiologist, and a pathologist.
How do I choose a doctor for Ovarian Cancer?
When selecting a provider, look for a gynaecological oncologist or surgical oncologist with documented experience in advanced ovarian cancer cytoreduction and, where relevant, HIPEC procedures, practising at a centre that offers multidisciplinary tumour board review, genetic counselling, and structured long-term follow-up.
What documents do international patients need to share for a medical evaluation?
Share a medical summary, investigation and imaging or biopsy reports where relevant, a current medication list, previous diagnoses and related treatment records. Provide clear copies with translation where needed.
How does GAF Healthcare help international patients plan treatment in India?
Our care coordination team helps review initial medical information, connect you with suitable doctors and hospitals, explain next steps and indicative estimates, and organise a treatment plan before travel.
