Why consider treatment in India?
Many international patients consider India for chronic middle ear disease treatment for several reasons, including:
More affordable estimates
Competitive indicative costs compared with many other countries, for similar clinical standards.
Internationally accredited hospitals
Hospitals experienced in treating international patients.
Experienced specialists
Doctors who regularly manage similar cases.
Care coordination support
A team to help with planning, medical translation and follow-up.
What is Mastoidectomy?
Mastoidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove infected or diseased mastoid air cells behind the ear, most commonly performed to treat chronic middle ear infections (chronic suppurative otitis media) and cholesteatoma. It helps eliminate infection, prevent serious complications such as facial nerve damage or intracranial spread, and, in select cases, preserve or improve hearing. The technique used depends on the extent of disease and the anatomy of the ear canal.
Who may be considered?
Mastoidectomy may be considered after a qualified specialist reviews your reports and medical history. Suitability varies from person to person and must be assessed by your treating doctor.
How does it work?
The mastoid is cleared of disease while keeping the natural ear canal wall intact, preserving normal ear canal anatomy and often allowing better hearing rehabilitation.
Canal Wall Up (Intact Canal Wall) Mastoidectomy
Most PopularThe mastoid is cleared of disease while keeping the natural ear canal wall intact, preserving normal ear canal anatomy and often allowing better hearing rehabilitation.
Comprehensive Investigations
Pure tone audiometry, tympanometry, CT temporal bone, CBC, ECG, blood sugar and coagulation profile, ENT endoscopy
Treatment / Procedure Estimate
Stay in India
Usually Included in Hospital Package
- Surgeon and anesthetist fees
- Operating room and microscope/endoscope charges
- Standard hospital room stay
- Routine post-op medications
- One follow-up consultation
Usually Not Included
- Pre-operative investigations and imaging
- Hearing aid or ossicular prosthesis if needed
- Extended ICU stay if complications arise
- Travel, visa, and accommodation outside hospital
- Long-term audiology follow-up visits
Recovery and follow-up
Most patients can resume light activities within 1-2 weeks, while full recovery and hearing stabilization may take 4-8 weeks; ear packing removal and follow-up audiometry are typically scheduled during this period. Swimming, diving, and air travel should be avoided until the surgeon confirms the ear has fully healed.
Risks
Potential risks include hearing loss, facial nerve injury, dizziness, taste disturbance, persistent ear discharge, or recurrence of disease requiring revision surgery. Serious complications such as meningitis or brain abscess are rare but possible in advanced or infected cases.
Alternatives
In mild or early cases, prolonged medical therapy with antibiotics and regular ear cleaning may be tried before surgery, though it often fails to resolve cholesteatoma or recurrent chronic infection. Tympanoplasty alone (without mastoid surgery) may be an option when mastoid involvement is minimal.

Share whatever you have — the care team will confirm the final checklist after reviewing your case.

How this directory is built
Doctors are matched using the specialty, location, condition (Mastoidectomy) and procedure (Mastoidectomy) recorded in their profiles. Inclusion is not an endorsement and does not guarantee a treatment outcome.
