About Uterine Prolapse doctors in Bengaluru, India

This directory is based on doctors currently listed in GAF Healthcare's registry. Clinical suitability varies by patient; a doctor should review your history and investigations before any treatment decision.

About the Condition

What is Uterine Prolapse?

Uterine prolapse occurs when the uterus descends into or beyond the vaginal canal because the pelvic floor muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that normally support it have weakened or stretched. It is more common in women who have had one or more vaginal deliveries, have reached menopause, or have a history of chronic straining from constipation, heavy lifting, or a persistent cough, though it can affect women of any age. Left unaddressed, prolapse can lead to associated complications including urinary incontinence or retention, recurrent urinary tract infections, bowel dysfunction, and significant impact on sexual function and quality of life. A thorough assessment — including medical history, obstetric history, and a physical pelvic examination — is essential to determine the degree of prolapse and guide appropriate management.

Treatment options for Uterine Prolapse

Care may include lifestyle changes, medical treatment, specialist review or a procedure, depending on the diagnosis, associated conditions and individual goals. The options below are associated with this condition in the GAF Healthcare directory.

Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus, performed to treat conditions such as uterine prolapse, abnormal uterine bleeding, fibroids, adenomyosis, or gynaecological cancers when conservative treatments have failed.

Why it may be consideredDepending on the underlying condition and anatomy, the surgery can be performed laparoscopically, vaginally, or through an open abdominal incision. India offers advanced minimally invasive options performed by experienced gynaecological surgeons at a fraction of the cost of Western countries.

Common questions

FAQs about Uterine Prolapse in Bengaluru, India

What is Uterine Prolapse?
Uterine prolapse is a condition in which the uterus slips downward from its normal position and protrudes into or outside the vaginal opening, due to weakening of the supportive structures of the pelvic floor. It exists on a spectrum of severity, from mild descent to complete prolapse outside the body.
What are the symptoms and health risks of Uterine Prolapse?
Common symptoms include a sensation of pressure, heaviness, or 'something falling out' in the pelvis, lower back discomfort, difficulty with urination or bowel movements, and, in more advanced cases, visible or palpable tissue at or outside the vaginal opening. Some women also report pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse, or notice that symptoms worsen with prolonged standing or physical activity and ease when lying down. It is important to note that the presence or severity of symptoms does not on its own establish a clinical diagnosis — a formal examination by a qualified clinician is required.
How is Uterine Prolapse diagnosed?
Diagnosis is typically made through a pelvic examination, during which the clinician assesses the degree of descent using a standardised grading system; the most widely used is the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (POP-Q) system, which classifies prolapse from Stage I (mild descent, remaining above the vaginal opening) to Stage IV (complete prolapse outside the body). In addition to examining the uterus, the clinician will assess for concurrent prolapse of the bladder (cystocele) or rectum (rectocele), as these frequently co-occur. Further investigations — such as urodynamic studies to evaluate bladder function, pelvic floor ultrasound, or MRI — may be recommended depending on the clinical picture and planned treatment approach.
How is Uterine Prolapse treated?
The appropriate treatment for uterine prolapse depends on the stage of prolapse, the woman's symptoms, her overall health, reproductive wishes, and personal preferences — and should always be determined through individual assessment by a qualified specialist. Mild to moderate prolapse is frequently managed without surgery through pelvic floor rehabilitation, lifestyle modification, and the use of a vaginal pessary to provide mechanical support. When prolapse is more advanced, symptoms are significantly affecting quality of life, or conservative measures have not provided sufficient relief, surgical options — which may include uterine-preserving repair procedures or hysterectomy combined with pelvic floor reconstruction — may be considered.
Can Uterine Prolapse be treated without surgery?
Non-surgical management is a well-established and effective pathway for many women, particularly those with Stage I–II prolapse or those who are not surgical candidates. Supervised pelvic floor muscle training (Kegel exercises), management of contributing factors such as chronic constipation or excess weight, and fitting of a vaginal pessary (a removable device that mechanically supports the uterus) are the principal non-surgical options. Topical oestrogen therapy may also be recommended for postmenopausal women to help maintain vaginal tissue health, though its use is guided by individual medical assessment.
When is Hysterectomy considered for Uterine Prolapse?
Hysterectomy may be considered when conservative or medical options have not achieved enough improvement, or when the severity of the condition warrants it. The decision depends on clinical assessment, expected benefits and individual risks.
Which doctor treats Uterine Prolapse?
Uterine prolapse is evaluated and managed by a gynaecologist, and in many cases by a urogynaecologist or a gynaecologist with specialist training in pelvic floor disorders — particularly when urinary or bowel dysfunction is present alongside the prolapse. If surgery is planned, a gynaecological surgeon experienced in pelvic reconstructive procedures or, where hysterectomy is indicated, a gynaecologist with dedicated expertise in that procedure will typically lead care.
How do I choose a doctor for Uterine Prolapse?
When selecting a clinician, it is worth asking about their specific experience with pelvic floor assessment and reconstruction, the volume of cases they manage at the relevant stage of prolapse, and whether they work within a multidisciplinary team that includes physiotherapists specialising in pelvic floor rehabilitation — as access to conservative care alongside surgical expertise tends to support the best long-term outcomes. Confirming the availability of structured follow-up, particularly if a pessary is fitted or surgery is performed, is also an important practical consideration.
What documents do international patients need to share for a medical evaluation?
Share a medical summary, investigation and imaging or biopsy reports where relevant, a current medication list, previous diagnoses and related treatment records. Provide clear copies with translation where needed.
How does GAF Healthcare help international patients plan treatment in India?
Our care coordination team helps review initial medical information, connect you with suitable doctors and hospitals, explain next steps and indicative estimates, and organise a treatment plan before travel.
