About Dr. Venkat Sainaresh Vellanki

Dr. Venkat Sainaresh Vellanki is the Consultant and Head of Nephrology, and Director of Transplant Nephrology at Burjeel Medical City, Abu Dhabi — one of the region's most advanced quaternary care centres. He brings a rare combination of North American, British, and Indian training that spans clinical nephrology, interventional nephrology, and all modalities of kidney transplantation.

After completing his MD in Internal Medicine at KMC Manipal University (2004) and a Senior Residency in Nephrology at NIMS University (2005), Dr. Venkat pursued a Doctorate of Medicine (DM) in Nephrology at SVIMS University, Hyderabad (2008). He then moved to Canada for a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (RCPSCA)-accredited Clinical Fellowship in Adult Nephrology at the University Health Network (UHN), University of Toronto (2015), where he also passed the Adult Nephrology RCPSCA board examination and obtained his Designated Specialist Certification in Clinical Hypertension from the American Society of Hypertension.

At Toronto General Hospital — one of North America's busiest transplant centres — he completed an additional accredited fellowship in Kidney-Pancreas Transplantation within the Division of Multiorgan Transplantation (2016). He is a certified Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology (FASN), and holds USMLE/ECFMG and Medical Council of Canada (MCCEE) certifications. In 2023, he added an MSc in Solid Organ Transplantation from the University of Liverpool.

Dr. Venkat has extensive experience in the full spectrum of kidney transplantation, including ABO-incompatible transplants, kidney transplantation in HIV-positive patients, liver-kidney and kidney-pancreas simultaneous transplants, redo transplants, paired kidney exchange, and transplantation in high-risk sensitised patients. He is equally skilled in the complete range of dialysis therapies — haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, CRRT, and SLED — and runs a busy interventional nephrology practice covering vascular access and kidney biopsy. He has authored multiple publications indexed on PubMed and has served on scientific committees of the Indian Society of Nephrology at state and national level.
