What is Lobectomy?
The right lung has upper, middle and lower lobes; the left has upper and lower. Each lobe has its own bronchus and vessels. After the lobe is removed, the remaining lobes must fill the chest, and mediastinal nodes are sampled in the same operation when the indication is cancer. This page is about removing one anatomical lobe, not a wedge of lung and not a whole lung. Which lobe is taken, whether a sleeve of airway is needed, and whether nodes are dissected are the decisions that change recovery and cost.
