What is Bone Marrow Aspiration?
Bone marrow aspiration withdraws liquid marrow, usually from the posterior iliac crest, for cell morphology, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, molecular testing or microbiology. A marrow needle enters the posterior iliac bone after local anaesthetic, and small liquid aliquots are drawn promptly into the correct tubes. Slides should be made before clotting and specimens routed without delay.
