What is Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM)?
POEM is an endoscopic myotomy that creates a submucosal tunnel in the oesophagus to cut selected muscle fibres for achalasia or related motility disorders after manometry has confirmed the diagnosis. Under anaesthesia, a mucosal incision is made, a submucosal tunnel is created and a planned length of circular muscle is cut. The incision is then closed with clips.
